BHOPAL: Three police personnel, including the station in-charge, have been suspended after a lawyer alleged that he was assaulted at a police station in Bhopal.
Around 50 lawyers gathered at the Jahangirabad police station in Bhopal on Tuesday night and continued their protest until about 3am. They demanded action against the police personnel and registration of an FIR.
The suspended personnel include the station in-charge and two constables. They have been attached to the Reserve Centre during the suspension period. A preliminary inquiry has been ordered and must be completed within seven days.
The dispute began around 8pm when advocate Rakesh Rawal was stopped by police near the Khatlapura temple area. Rawal alleged that police asked him to come to the station. He said that when he explained that his vehicle had no fuel and asked for an alternative route to Bairagarh, an argument followed.
Rawal alleged that police personnel abused him and beat him with sticks, causing injuries to his legs. Lawyers later shared a video showing the alleged injuries and his mud-stained clothes.
Police gave a different account, saying the lawyer had allegedly misbehaved with a traffic officer during the dispute.
Officials said the inquiry will examine the incident and the claims made by both sides before further action is decided.
