Bhopal Metro to Drop Two Planned Stations After DPR Review

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has started the process of revising the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Bhopal Metro project after approving a proposal to remove two planned metro stations.

The proposal has been cleared by the corporation’s Board of Directors and will now be sent to the Central Government for final approval.

The Bhopal Metro project was approved by the Central Government in November 2018 with a plan for 29 stations. The approved network included 16 stations on the Orange Line and 13 stations on the Blue Line.

During the execution of the project, MPMRCL carried out a detailed review under its value engineering and cost optimisation exercise. The study examined technical, financial and operational aspects to reduce costs without affecting safety, construction quality or passenger services.

Based on the review, the proposed Ashbagh Metro Station on the Orange Line has been found technically difficult to build because of site-related constraints.

The proposed Govindpura Metro Station on the Blue Line has also been recommended for removal. Officials said the distance between nearby stations is shorter than the standards prescribed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, making the station operationally unsuitable.

Following these findings, the Board of Directors approved the proposal to amend the DPR and remove both stations. The revised DPR has now been forwarded for approval by the Government of India.

Once approved, the Bhopal Metro network will have 27 stations, including 15 stations on the Orange Line and 12 stations on the Blue Line.

MPMRCL said the revision is part of its effort to ensure that the metro project remains technically sound, financially viable and cost-effective while maintaining safety and operational efficiency.
