Nepal Airlines apologises after map error sparks backlash

New Delhi : Nepal Airlines has apologised after a network map shared on its social media platforms incorrectly depicted Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as part of Pakistan, prompting widespread criticism.

The state-owned carrier posted the route map on Wednesday, triggering swift backlash from users, particularly in India, where the image circulated widely on social media. Critics called for official intervention, with some urging authorities to raise the matter diplomatically.

As criticism mounted, the airline deleted the post and issued an apology within 24 hours, describing the depiction as a “cartographic inaccuracy”. It said the error did not reflect the official stance of either the airline or the Nepalese government.

“We sincerely apologise for the error in the network map. The map contained significant inaccuracies regarding international boundaries,” the airline said, adding that it regretted any offence caused.

The carrier also announced an internal review to determine how the error occurred and to prevent similar incidents.

The controversy drew reactions from public figures, including Bhojpuri actor-singer Khesari Lal Yadav, who questioned whether the depiction was intentional.

The incident comes as Nepal Airlines seeks to expand operations in India, including plans to increase flight frequency on the Kathmandu–Delhi route from one daily service to up to 10 flights a week, amid efforts to strengthen regional connectivity.
