Raja Shivaji logs record Rs. 40 crore opening weekend for Marathi cinema

The Raja Shivaji, starring Ritesh Deshmukh, has delivered the biggest opening weekend in Marathi cinema, collecting about Rs. 39.75 crore gross (Rs. 32.5 crore nett) in India.

The film earned roughly Rs. 14.5 crore on Sunday, taking its three-day total to just under Rs. 40 crore. Of the weekend gross, the Marathi version contributed about Rs. 26.5 crore, while the Hindi version added approximately Rs. 13.25 crore, with both versions showing growth on Sunday.

The opening surpasses previous Marathi benchmarks by a wide margin, aided by a larger scale and budget than typical regional releases. Trade expectations had already been elevated, given the strong performance in Maharashtra of Maratha-empire-themed Hindi titles such as Tanhaji and Chhaava.

In Maharashtra alone, the film grossed around Rs. 28.75 crore over the weekend, with Sunday collections exceeding those on opening day. Films in this genre have historically shown strong legs in the state, and if the trend holds, the title could target Rs. 100 crore within Maharashtra. For context, Chhaava is the state’s highest grosser at over Rs. 300 crore, while leading Marathi hits such as Sairat and Baipan Bhari Deva have collected around Rs. 90 crore.

India box office (gross):

  • Friday: Rs. 13.00 crore
  • Saturday: Rs. 12.25 crore
  • Sunday: Rs. 14.50 crore
  • Total: Rs. 39.75 crore
