The men’s rights activist came into the spotlight after an ink-throwing incident at Jantar Mantar, where Abhijeet Deepke began a hunger strike following Sonam Wangchuk’s removal.
New Delhi: Barkha Trehan, a men’s rights activist and founder of the Purush Aayog (Men’s Commission), has come under the spotlight after she was accused of throwing ink at activist Abhijeet Deepke during a protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday.
The incident took place hours after Sonam Wangchuk was removed from his hunger strike site by Delhi Police and taken to Safdarjung Hospital. Following Wangchuk’s removal, Deepke sat on a hunger strike in protest. Videos circulating on social media appear to show a woman identified as Barkha Trehan throwing blue ink at him. Police have not yet issued a detailed public statement on the incident.
Trehan was identified by fact-checker Mohammed Zubair, who said the woman seen in the viral videos was Barkha Trehan. She is known for advocating men’s rights and has frequently spoken in favour of gender-neutral laws. On her LinkedIn profile, she describes herself as an activist, entrepreneur, constitutionalist, egalitarian and founder of the Purush Aayog.
Trehan has previously attracted attention for publicly supporting Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the former BJP MLA convicted in the Unnao rape case. During protests over the suspension of Sengar’s sentence last year, she argued that court orders should be respected and said justice should not be decided through street protests. Photographs from that protest showed her holding placards supporting Sengar.
After the ink-throwing incident, Trehan alleged that she was assaulted by people present at the protest. As police escorted her away from Jantar Mantar, videos showed her claiming that she had been beaten. She was also heard raising religious slogans while being taken into custody. According to reports, police detained her following the incident.
Meanwhile, Deepke continued his protest after the incident. Addressing supporters, he remarked that blue was his favourite colour and raised the slogan “Jai Bhim” before resuming his hunger strike.
