E100 Fuel: The Indian government has changed its vehicle rules to allow vehicles that run on 100% ethanol. This will help carmakers launch more vehicles that use ethanol instead of petrol.
It also supports India’s goal of buying less crude oil from other countries. But not every petrol car can use E100. Only vehicles specially made and approved for it can.
What Has the Government Decided?
The government has updated the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to include E100 fuel. These rules cover vehicle emissions (the smoke and gases a vehicle gives out) and vehicle approvals.
Now, carmakers have a clearer path to build vehicles that run on 100% ethanol and get them approved.
This is part of India’s bigger plan to use more alternative fuels and use less petrol made from crude oil.
But remember, this does not mean every petrol car can use E100. Only vehicles specially made and approved for it can use it.
What Is E100 Fuel?
E100 is a fuel made almost fully from ethanol. Ethanol is a type of alcohol. It is made from plants like sugarcane and corn, by processing the sugar or starch in them.
Ethanol can also be mixed with petrol. India is already using E20 petrol, which has 20% ethanol and about 80% petrol.
E100 is different. It is almost all ethanol, with no real mix of petrol.
Can My Car Use E100 Fuel?
No. A normal petrol car, or a car that runs on E20 petrol, cannot use E100.
Ethanol behaves differently from petrol. Vehicles that use a lot of ethanol need special engines and fuel systems.
If your car is not approved for E100, do not fill it with this fuel. It could damage the engine or fuel system.
You do not need to change or replace your car because of this news. Just keep using the fuel your car maker recommends.
What Is a Flex-Fuel Vehicle?
A flex-fuel vehicle can run on different mixes of petrol and ethanol.
These vehicles have special engines and fuel systems made to handle the mix. Some can run on E85, which has up to 85% ethanol. Others may be made for E100.
Not every flex-fuel vehicle works with every blend. Always check your vehicle’s certificate and the maker’s instructions before you choose a fuel.
How Can E100 Help India?
India buys a large amount of the crude oil it needs from other countries. Petrol and diesel are made from crude oil.
If India makes and uses more ethanol, it can buy less crude oil. This can save the money India spends on imports.
According to government figures, India’s ethanol blending programme saved more than ₹1.90 lakh crore in foreign money between 2014–15 and May 2026. It also cut crude oil imports by about 31 million metric tonnes.
Note that these numbers are for the whole ethanol blending programme. They are not savings from E100 alone.
How Can Farmers Benefit?
Ethanol is made from crops like sugarcane and corn. More demand for ethanol can give farmers more chances to sell these crops. It can also help sugar mills and other ethanol businesses.

The government says the ethanol blending programme has given farmers more than ₹1.60 lakh crore in extra income.
But how much a farmer really gains depends on crop prices, the cost of growing, demand, and how much ethanol makers buy.
Can E100 Reduce Pollution?
Using ethanol instead of some fossil fuel can help lower carbon emissions and reduce the need for crude oil.
But ethanol vehicles are not completely pollution-free. Their emissions depend on the engine, the vehicle technology and the fuel used.
How ethanol is made also matters. Growing crops, using water and energy, processing the plants and carrying the fuel can all create emissions.
So to know the real benefit, we need to look at the whole journey, from making the fuel to burning it in a vehicle.
Will Petrol Cars Be Banned?
No. This decision does not ban or stop petrol cars.
E100 is just another fuel option for vehicles made to use it. Regular petrol cars can keep running on the fuel their makers approve.
Nobody is being forced to use E100.
Will E100 Be Easy to Find Everywhere?
Not yet. The new rule makes it easier for carmakers to get approvals, but the fuel also has to reach drivers.
Fuel companies must make enough E100 and send it to petrol pumps. Carmakers must also launch suitable vehicles.
Until E100 is easy to find, buying a vehicle that depends on it may not work for everyone. The price of the fuel and the cost of these vehicles will also matter.
Which Other Countries Use Flex-Fuel Vehicles?
Brazil has used ethanol as a vehicle fuel for many years. Flex-fuel vehicles are also used in the United States.
These countries give India useful examples. But success in India will depend on fuel supply, vehicle prices, how much ethanol can be made, and how many people want these vehicles.
What Should Car Owners Remember?
E100 is a new fuel option for specially made vehicles.
It can help India depend less on imported crude oil.
It may bring new chances for farmers and ethanol makers.
E100 cannot be used in every petrol car. Only vehicles made and approved for it should use it.
Current car owners do not need to change or replace their vehicles.
The future of E100 in India will depend on how easy the fuel is to find, its price, how many suitable vehicles are launched, and how well the supply network grows.
