NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday advised Sonam Raghuvanshi, an accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, to surrender while it considers the Meghalaya government’s appeal against the bail granted to her by the Meghalaya High Court, according to media reports.
A Bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale said Sonam had two options. The court could either hear the Meghalaya government’s appeal and pass a final order after considering arguments from both sides, or she could surrender to enable investigating agencies to question her while the issue of bail is examined.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on 23 July, when the Supreme Court is expected to decide whether Sonam’s bail should continue or be cancelled.
According to media reports, the Meghalaya High Court granted Sonam bail on 26 April 2026, subject to conditions including not influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence, appearing before the court on every hearing, not leaving the court’s jurisdiction without permission, and furnishing a personal bond of Rs 50,000.
During the hearing, the Bench questioned why the defence had not earlier raised the issue of Sonam allegedly not being informed of the grounds of her arrest. Her counsel sought time to file a response.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Meghalaya government, opposed the bail. According to media reports, he argued that Sonam had voluntarily surrendered before the police and that any omission in the arrest memo was only a clerical error. The Supreme Court will continue hearing the matter on 23 July.
