Silver Coins Discovered in Village Excavation

SAGAR: Forty-nine silver coins believed to be of historical significance were unearthed during foundation excavation work at a house under construction in Reguwan village of Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, officials said.

The discovery was made when labourers engaged in digging the foundation of a house owned by Dayal Ahirwar found an earthen pot buried underground. On opening the pot, they discovered 49 silver coins.

Initial observations suggest the coins could date back to the Mughal period, as they bear inscriptions in Urdu-Persian script. However, officials said their age, origin and historical significance can only be confirmed after a detailed examination by experts.

Following the discovery, the house owner informed the police and handed over the coins to authorities. The coins were subsequently seized and taken into official custody.

Police said the matter has been reported to the local tehsildar and the Archaeological Department for further investigation.

Officials added that experts will examine the coins to determine their authenticity, age and historical value. The coins will remain in government custody until the assessment is completed.
