200-Year-Old Mosque Razed In 22 Minutes During Midnight Operation In Varanasi

VARANASI: The Ajgaib Shaheed Mosque demolition was carried out in Varanasi shortly after midnight on Tuesday, with authorities removing the structure as part of a railway land clearance drive linked to the expansion of Kashi Railway Station.

The operation began around 12 am in the Bhadau Chungi area and was completed in about 22 minutes. Officials deployed more than 1,000 police personnel and used five bulldozers to carry out the demolition under tight security.

Authorities also removed the debris during the night and restored normal movement in the area before morning.

“The land belongs to the Railways and the court has already ruled in its favour. Action was taken after the legal process was completed,” officials said.

Ajgaib Shaheed Mosque Demolition Linked To Railway Project

Officials said the mosque stood on railway land identified for the redevelopment and expansion of Kashi Railway Station.

According to the administration, a land survey carried out during the station modernisation project found that the mosque and adjoining graveyard were located on railway property.

The Railways later issued notices asking occupants to vacate the land. Authorities said legal proceedings were completed and the court ruled in favour of the Railways before the demolition was carried out.

Muslim Side Said Structure Was Around 200 Years Old

The mosque and graveyard were located in the Qila Kohna area near Bhadau Chungi. Members of the local Muslim community said the mosque was around 200 years old.

The site covered about 15 biswa of land and also contained several graves and shrines.

Officials said the demolition was carried out during the night to avoid traffic congestion and maintain public order. Police remained deployed in the area on Wednesday as a precautionary measure.

No major law and order issues were reported during or after the operation.
