PUNE: A woman and her alleged boyfriend have been arrested in connection with the death of her fiancé after he fell into a deep gorge at Lohagad Fort near Pune, police said.
The case has attracted attention because of similarities to another widely reported murder investigation involving a newly married man.
Police said the victim, a 26-year-old real-estate businessman, died after falling into a gorge during a trekking trip with his fiancée. Investigators allege that the woman and her boyfriend conspired to kill him and attempted to portray the incident as an accident.
According to police, the couple were due to marry later this year and wedding preparations were already underway. Investigators allege that the woman was in a relationship with another man and did not want to proceed with the marriage.
Authorities further alleged that an earlier attempt to harm the victim had failed before the pair allegedly carried out the fatal plan during the trekking trip.
Police said phone records, social media activity and CCTV footage formed part of the evidence that led investigators to suspect foul play. Both suspects were subsequently arrested and charged with murder and criminal conspiracy.
The investigation remains ongoing as police seek to determine whether any other individuals were involved.
The victim’s family has called for a fast-track trial and demanded the strictest possible punishment if the accused are convicted.
