BHOPAL: Police have arrested a man accused of killing a factory worker in Bhopal after the victim allegedly resisted an attempted sexual assault, officials said on Wednesday.
The victim’s body was found near a culvert in the Katara Hills area on May 24. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, police took several days to establish his identity. Investigators later identified him as a Bhopal resident employed at a factory in Mandideep.
A post-mortem examination found severe head injuries, leading police to register a murder case and begin an investigation.
Police said the victim’s missing mobile phone provided a crucial lead. Investigators traced the device and eventually identified the suspect, who was taken into custody for questioning.
According to police, the accused told investigators that he met the victim on the night of the incident and took him to a secluded area after offering him food. Police allege that the suspect attempted to force sexual relations and attacked the victim with a stone after he resisted.
The victim died at the scene from head injuries, police said. The accused allegedly fled with the victim’s mobile phone after the attack.
Investigators said the suspect has a prior criminal record and had previously served time in jail in another case. He has undergone a medical examination and was produced before a court. Police said further investigation is underway.
