India’s young athletes impressed at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, showcasing the country’s growing strength across multiple sports.
India has once again underlined its growing sporting strength after a young squad delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Indian contingent won 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, despite several traditional medal-winning sports being excluded from this edition of the Games. The performance showcased the rise of a new generation of athletes and reinforced India’s ambitions of becoming a global sporting power ahead of hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
India Shows Strength Beyond Traditional Sports
The 2026 Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. India fielded 122 athletes across eight regular sports and five para-sports. The team returned with 39 medals, finishing with a strong overall performance despite the absence of wrestling, badminton, hockey, shooting and table tennis, disciplines that have traditionally contributed a significant share of India’s medal tally.
The broad spread of medals across boxing, athletics, judo, weightlifting and para-sports reflected India’s improving depth in international competition. Indian athletes also achieved multiple double-podium finishes during the Games.
Among the standout performers from Madhya Pradesh were Yamini Maurya, who won a silver medal in judo, and Ajay Babu, who secured silver in weightlifting. Both athletes train under the state’s sports academy system and added to Madhya Pradesh’s growing reputation for producing international competitors.

Boxing emerged as India’s most successful discipline in Glasgow. The country won a record 10 medals, including seven gold medals, the highest number of boxing gold medals won by any nation at a single Commonwealth Games.
Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain added another Commonwealth medal by winning silver, while young boxer Sakshi Chaudhary impressed with her performances and strengthened hopes for the future of Indian boxing.
The results demonstrated that India’s investment in boxing infrastructure and athlete development is producing consistent international success.
India Records Landmark Performances Across Sports
Weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu completed a remarkable hat-trick by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. In men’s weightlifting, Rishikant Singh became the first Indian in the able-bodied category to reach the podium in the men’s 60kg event by winning silver.
In judo, Asmita Dey became India’s first Commonwealth champion in the sport, while Harsh Singh also secured a medal to mark another historic achievement.
Athletics also produced memorable performances. Gulveer Singh became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games. Tejaswin Shankar became the first Indian to win a decathlon medal at the Games. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, returning after missing Birmingham 2022 because of injury, won silver in the men’s javelin throw.
Para Athletes Deliver Best-Ever Commonwealth Campaign
India also achieved its strongest para-sports performance in Commonwealth Games history. The country won seven medals, including three gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
Six of these medals came in para-athletics, ending a two-decade wait for Indian athletes to reach the podium in several events. Indian para-athletes also secured multiple double-podium finishes, highlighting the growing competitiveness of the country’s para-sports programme.
India Climbs Higher in Commonwealth Games History
With the 39 medals won in Glasgow, India’s all-time Commonwealth Games medal tally has reached 603 medals from 19 appearances.
India now ranks as the fourth most successful nation in Commonwealth Games history, behind only Australia, England and Canada. The achievement reflects the country’s expanding sporting ecosystem, improved athlete support and wider participation across disciplines.
The performance also comes as India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, giving the country an opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure, organisational capability and rising athletic standards on the global stage.
Speaking on the achievements, Madhya Pradesh Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Vishvas Kailash Sarang said India’s Gen Z athletes have transformed themselves from symbols of potential into champions who are delivering results on the international stage. He said the success reflects the combined efforts of athletes, coaches, support staff and sustained investment in sports infrastructure and talent development by both the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government.
