Iran Sets Conditions for Talks with US

Iran has sent a new nuclear proposal to the United States through Qatar, but says negotiations will begin only after Washington meets its demands, according to a Reuters report.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters on Thursday that the US was reviewing the proposal but did not disclose its full contents.

Iran’s top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, said Tehran had presented seven conditions to Washington and would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz or resume negotiations until they were fulfilled.

According to reports, Iran’s key demands include lifting US economic sanctions, releasing frozen Iranian assets and providing compensation for wartime damage. Other reported demands concern restrictions on maritime trade and oil exports.

However, the complete list of seven conditions has not been independently confirmed. The infographic circulating alongside the report should therefore not be treated as an official list.

The main disagreement between the two countries remains Iran’s nuclear programme. Washington wants nuclear issues included in the initial negotiations, while Tehran is linking further discussions to the fulfilment of its demands.

Qatar is acting as an intermediary, helping both sides exchange proposals as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent the conflict from escalating.

The US has not publicly confirmed acceptance of Iran’s conditions. It remains unclear whether the latest proposal will lead to fresh negotiations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern because of its importance to international oil shipments.
