MUMBAI: Indian benchmark equity indices ended higher on Monday, extending recent gains amid easing geopolitical concerns, lower crude oil prices and strength in technology and energy stocks, according to media reports.
The BSE Sensex gained 291.17 points, or 0.38%, to close at 77,094.07, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 89.80 points, or 0.37%, to settle at 24,102.90.
According to media reports, the market’s positive momentum was supported by softer oil prices, improving investor sentiment and gains in Reliance Industries and information technology stocks.
Reliance Industries rose 1.31%, while technology shares including Tech Mahindra, Infosys, TCS and HCLTech recovered from losses seen in the previous session. The Nifty IT index advanced 0.74%.
Media reports said investor sentiment also received support from progress in diplomatic discussions aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East, helping reduce concerns over global oil supply disruptions.
Brent crude traded below $80 per barrel at around $79.36, down 1.5%, according to market data cited in media reports.
Sectoral indices largely ended in positive territory, led by media, pharmaceutical, healthcare, oil and gas and financial services stocks. Banking shares also closed higher.
The broader market outperformed the benchmark indices, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 gaining 0.60% and the Nifty Midcap 100 rising 0.34%.
Market volatility eased, with the India VIX falling nearly 1% to 12.84, indicating improved investor confidence, according to media reports.
Analysts quoted by media reports said investors will continue to monitor crude oil prices, monsoon progress, foreign investment flows and upcoming corporate earnings for further market direction.
