MP Targets Self-Reliance in Fish Seed Production

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has directed officials to establish at least one fish hatchery in every district and work towards making the state self-reliant in fish seed production within the next two-and-a-half years.

During a review meeting of the Fisheries Welfare and Fisheries Development Department, CM said the state’s Integrated Fisheries Industry Policy 2026 had attracted investment proposals worth more than Rs 9,000 crore, with work orders already issued for approved projects.

He also called for greater promotion of pearl cultivation and asked officials to study successful models from other states. The chief minister said improved availability of fish seed at the district level would help increase fish production across the state.

CM directed officials to expand cold-chain infrastructure and other facilities needed to support the fisheries sector. He also emphasised the need to strengthen branding, exports and market linkages.

The chief minister said departments should coordinate efforts for river rejuvenation and the conservation of aquatic life. He also called for plans to develop aquatic ecosystems and promote tourism activities linked to water bodies.

According to officials, Madhya Pradesh ranks second in the country in the issuance of Fishermen Credit Cards for inland fisheries. Seoni district secured the top national ranking in inland fisheries for 2023-24.
