New Delhi: The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a petition seeking urgent medical care for activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for 18 days over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
The petition states that Wangchuk’s health has deteriorated during the fast and requests the court to direct the authorities to ensure he receives appropriate medical attention, including hospital care and nutritional support if considered necessary by medical experts.
The High Court agreed to take up the matter and listed it for hearing the next day after noting that government representatives were not present during the initial proceedings.
According to the petition, Wangchuk has lost around 8.5 kg since beginning his hunger strike on June 28. It argues that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, the authorities also have a responsibility to safeguard the health and well-being of individuals.
The plea further submits that timely medical intervention is necessary in view of the activist’s reported condition. It also seeks directions for the concerned authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure his safety while respecting his legal rights.
Wangchuk joined a protest demanding the resignation of the Union education minister over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. The High Court is expected to consider the petition and seek a response from the concerned authorities during the next hearing.
