Iran Funeral: Granddaughter’s Tiny Coffin Becomes Most Emotional Image

TEHRAN: The funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has drawn huge crowds and senior officials, but the image that has resonated most is the tiny coffin of his 14-month-old granddaughter, Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani.

Placed beside the coffins of Khamenei and other family members, the child’s casket became a powerful symbol of personal loss during ceremonies marked by military honours, religious rituals and political messages. A photograph of Zahra displayed near the coffins has attracted widespread attention, with many focusing on the family’s grief rather than the wider political backdrop.

Khamenei’s body lay in state at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, where thousands of mourners gathered to pay their respects. Supporters offered prayers, wept openly and placed flowers on the coffins during the official ceremonies.

Authorities have organised a week of nationwide funeral processions before Khamenei is buried in Mashhad, following ceremonial events in the holy cities of Qom, Najaf and Karbala.

The funeral comes at a pivotal moment for Iran following Khamenei’s death, which ended nearly four decades as the country’s supreme leader. As the nation enters a period of political transition, the image of the child’s coffin has become the most widely shared and emotional moment of the ceremonies, highlighting the human cost of conflict beyond political divisions.
