Leaders from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are expected to meet in Cardiff on Monday to discuss self-determination, according to media reports.
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, Wales’ First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth and Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald are expected to attend the meeting.
The leaders are expected to discuss closer cooperation on the economy, energy, Europe and constitutional issues. A joint declaration on the right to pursue democratic self-determination is also expected, according to reports.
The meeting comes amid renewed debate over Scottish independence and Irish reunification.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said another Scottish independence referendum could be considered if there is a clear public consensus. He later said a referendum would be off limits before the next general election.
Under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, a referendum on Northern Ireland’s constitutional future can be held if there is evidence that a majority may support joining a united Ireland.
The Cardiff meeting could add further pressure to Westminster as debate over the future of the UK Union grows.
