New Delhi: YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and several opposition leaders were reportedly detained ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar against alleged irregularities in voter lists.
According to media reports, Rathee was detained from his Gurugram residence. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and party members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were also detained after arriving at Delhi airport.
Former chief ministers Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal and Pinarayi Vijayan were among the opposition leaders reportedly detained during the police action.
The protest organisers had called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over allegations concerning electoral rolls. The Election Commission’s voter revision process has been defended by the authorities, while opposition parties have raised concerns.
Delhi Police had denied permission for the demonstration and deployed security personnel across key areas of the capital.
