New Delhi: Sonam Wangchuk may end his hunger strike today, according to media reports, bringing renewed attention to the long history of fasting as a form of peaceful protest in India and around the world.
According to media reports, the Ladakhi activist was shifted from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital after completing 21 days of an indefinite fast. He has reportedly continued to refuse food and medical treatment while remaining under medical observation. His supporters are also expected to participate in a march to Parliament.
History shows that hunger strikes have ended in many different ways. Some have resulted in policy decisions or government assurances, while others ended without major changes. In some cases, protesters lost their lives, and authorities have occasionally intervened to prevent serious health risks.
One of Independent India’s most significant hunger strikes was by Gandhian activist Potti Sriramulu in 1952. His 58-day fast demanding a separate state for Telugu-speaking people ended with his death. According to historical records, widespread protests followed, and the government later announced the formation of Andhra State.
Another well-known example is Irom Sharmila, who remained on a hunger strike for nearly 16 years seeking the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). According to media reports, although her protest attracted global attention, her main demand was not fulfilled.
Anna Hazare’s 13-day anti-corruption fast in 2011 led to discussions in Parliament and later contributed to the enactment of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, though not exactly in the form demanded by activists.
Environmental activist GD Agrawal also undertook prolonged fasts to protect the Ganga River. According to media reports, he died in 2018 after a lengthy hunger strike.
As per media reports, Wangchuk’s protest remains under medical supervision. Whether it ends through dialogue, official assurances or another development remains uncertain, highlighting that every hunger strike has followed its own unique course.
