Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has said she was “totally against” her husband Rajiv Gandhi becoming prime minister, according to remarks in a video shared on social media.
Speaking about her upcoming memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, she said the book would present her personal account of events and could prompt mixed reactions.
“Some people may change their view about me. Some people’s view may become worse, but that’s what it is,” she said, adding that there was bound to be a “tamasha”, or commotion, over the book.
Sonia Gandhi book will publish on 10 November
The memoir is scheduled for publication on November 10. According to details shared ahead of its release, it traces Sonia Gandhi’s journey from her childhood in Italy to her life in India and her eventual entry into politics.

The book is expected to cover major events in the Gandhi family’s history, including Rajiv Gandhi’s entry into politics and the assassinations of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 and Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.
It is also expected to discuss Sonia Gandhi’s political career, her role in the Congress and her leadership following the party-led alliance’s victory in the 2004 general election.
After the election, Sonia Gandhi declined to become prime minister, and Manmohan Singh took office.
Her remarks about opposing Rajiv Gandhi’s elevation to the post offer a personal perspective on a significant period in the family’s political history.
The memoir is expected to explore themes of family, loss, public life and belonging. The full account will become available after the book’s publication.
