Abhishek Bachchan Says Films Guided by Relationships, Not Strategy

Mumbai: Actor Abhishek Bachchan has said that personal relationships, emotional comfort and trust play a central role in his choice of films, adding that he makes career decisions based on instinct rather than strategy.

Speaking during promotions of Raja Shivaji, Bachchan told India Today that he prefers collaborating with people with whom he shares a genuine bond.

“All of my films are based on relationships. I need to be very, very comfortable. I would not do a film just for strategic reasons,” he said, adding that he is “not built” for calculated decision-making.

He said emotional security on set is essential for his performance and described his experience working with Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza as “home-like”.

Bachchan also underlined the importance of trust between actor and director, calling it one of the most sensitive relationships in filmmaking. He said an actor must have complete faith in the director, comparing it to placing “one’s soul” in another’s hands.

“For me, all my films are based on emotion,” he said, reiterating that his choices are instinct-driven rather than strategic.

When asked if the success of Raja Shivaji could lead him to more Marathi-language films, Bachchan said he does not categorise cinema by language and remains open to any project that inspires him.

“I have never said no to anything. We are film actors. Indian cinema is all-encompassing,” he said.

However, he added in a lighter vein that Deshmukh and D’Souza had set a high benchmark for future collaborations, saying any filmmaker approaching him in Marathi cinema would need to meet those expectations.

Raja Shivaji was released in theatres on 1 May 2026.
