NEW DELHI: Actor Aamir Khan has reportedly begun work on a sequel to the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots, according to media reports.
The film is said to be in the pre-production stage, with the original lead cast R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi alongside Khan expected to reprise their roles.
Media reports said the sequel will feature a significant time leap, although details about the storyline remain under wraps. It is not yet clear whether the narrative will take place before or after the events of the original film. Reports suggest only Khan is aware of the project’s exact direction at present.
Director Rajkumar Hirani, who helmed the original film, is also expected to return for the sequel.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani and Mona Singh in key roles. The film became a major commercial and critical success for its portrayal of friendship, college life and the pressures of India’s education system.
According to industry estimates, the film earned more than Rs 400 crore worldwide and also performed strongly in China, where it emerged as one of the most successful Indian films released in the market.
