Indore: Allegations have emerged that municipal workers are dumping garbage in open residential areas and later setting it on fire at night, causing severe inconvenience to residents in parts of the city known for its Swachh Survekshan performance.
Videos circulating on social media show civic staff unloading waste in residential pockets and later burning it. The incidents are reportedly taking place even as a cleanliness survey is underway in the city.
The latest case has been reported from Ward No. 53 near the Netraram Baghicha area opposite Daly College, where waste is allegedly being dumped in open spaces using tractor-trolleys and later set ablaze. Residents said burning waste generates thick smoke and foul smell, making it difficult to live in the area. Despite repeated objections, the practice reportedly continues.
A video from May 28 shows garbage being dumped in the presence of a civic official. A day earlier, on May 27 night, a fire at the site spread rapidly, prompting residents to call the fire brigade, which brought it under control after efforts.
Officials said complaints have been received and reiterated that waste must not be dumped or burnt in open areas and should be disposed of only at designated sites.
Senior civic authorities have ordered an inquiry and said strict action will be taken if any staff involvement is established.
Officials said more than 50 complaints of garbage burning have been received over the past two months, with two to three incidents reported daily across the city. In several cases, fire has spread to nearby commercial establishments, raising concerns over waste management and monitoring systems.
