Man held for cheating woman of Rs 28 lakh

INDORE: A man has been arrested for allegedly pretending to be an Indian Army officer on a matrimonial website and cheating a woman of Rs 28 lakh, police said.

According to police, the accused was arrested in Delhi after being on the run for several months. Officers said he was planning to travel to Europe when he was caught.

Police said the man created a fake profile on Jeevansathi.com and claimed to be an Army officer. He contacted a woman from Indore through the website, and the two started talking about marriage.

During 2024, the accused allegedly told the woman that he was seriously ill and needed money for treatment. Police said the woman believed him and transferred about Rs 28 lakh to his bank account in several payments.

After receiving the money, the accused allegedly refused to marry her. The woman later filed a police complaint.

Police said their investigation found that the accused had been living abroad. He recently came to Delhi to meet his family, where the Indore Crime Branch arrested him.

According to police, the accused was planning to fly to Europe before he was arrested.

Police believe the man may have cheated other people in a similar way by using fake online profiles. Officers are checking his bank accounts, mobile phone and online records to find out if there are more victims.

The accused is being questioned, and the investigation is continuing.
