BHOPAL: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader and Hyderabad Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi has demanded that Muslims be excluded from the proposed Uniform Civil Code, comparing their status to the 21 per cent tribal population in Madhya Pradesh, according to local media reports.
Addressing a public gathering at the Central Library grounds in Bhopal, Owaisi accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government of using the Uniform Civil Code to advance the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Owaisi questioned the necessity of introducing the civil code alongside existing state anti-conversion laws, commonly referred to as “love jihad” legislation. He stated that if the Uniform Civil Code is implemented, anti-conversion statutes must be repealed, emphasising that consenting adults hold the constitutional right to choose their life partner.
According to reports, Owaisi expressed concern over attempts to replicate Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code framework across other Bharatiya Janata Party-governed states, including Gujarat, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. He also urged the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh to take immediate action regarding a recent liquor-related incident in Sagar district.
Responding to remarks by Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Legislative Assembly Rameshwar Sharma—who reportedly made statements regarding launching a missile from Karond into Kazi Camp—Owaisi issued a direct challenge, daring Sharma to visit Kazi Camp in person.
Owaisi further alleged that religious sites, including mosques and graveyards, are being targeted in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states, warning against the marginalisation of minority communities.
