US Prepares Military Bases for Emergencies

The US military is strengthening plans to protect its bases against major disruptions to power supplies, communications and critical supply chains under an initiative known as FORTRESS America, according to media reports.

The initiative was announced by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on 30 September 2026. It aims to improve the resilience of military installations against potential cyberattacks, sabotage and disruptions to essential infrastructure.

A report by Fox News Digital published on 25 October said major US military installations in the continental United States are expected to maintain essential operations independently for at least 90 days. However, the specific 90-day requirement has not been publicly confirmed as a fully adopted, department-wide standard.

The reported plan includes microgrids, battery storage systems and portable nuclear reactors to reduce dependence on civilian electricity networks. It also envisages strategic reserves of fuel, ammunition, medical supplies and other critical materials, alongside measures to prepare civilian factories for defence production during emergencies.

The initiative has attracted attention amid tensions involving the US and Iran and concerns about threats to critical infrastructure. However, its announcement does not establish that a wider war is imminent.

The plan reflects Washington’s efforts to strengthen military preparedness against potential emergencies that could disrupt operations at home. Further details on implementation, costs and timelines remain limited in public reporting.
