Jon Ossoff, the US senator from Georgia, is attracting attention as a possible future presidential candidate after securing re-election in a closely watched contest. His victory has strengthened his position in the Democratic Party and drawn comparisons with former president Barack Obama.
Ossoff, 39, first entered the Senate in 2021 after defeating a Republican candidate. His latest victory is significant because Georgia supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, making the seat an important test for Democrats.
During his campaign, Ossoff strongly criticised Trump and his administration, focusing on issues including corruption, governance and democracy. His speeches and confident public appearances have helped raise his profile among Democratic supporters.
Born in Atlanta in 1987, Ossoff studied at Georgetown University and the London School of Economics. He later worked in investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking before entering full-time politics.
His political journey included an unsuccessful congressional campaign in 2017. However, he won a Senate seat in 2021, becoming the youngest senator elected since 1973.
Ossoff is often compared with Obama because of his communication skills, youthful image and campaign style. Obama has also publicly praised him.
Although Ossoff has not announced plans to contest the 2028 presidential election, his latest victory has increased speculation about his political future. Any presidential bid, however, remains uncertain.
