Indian stock markets ended Friday’s session sharply higher, extending their winning streak to seven consecutive sessions despite a sell-off in global markets.
The BSE Sensex surged 1,718.01 points, or 2.17%, to close at 81,028.02. The NSE Nifty 50 gained 493.75 points, or 2.01%, to settle at 25,030.35, reclaiming the key 25,000 mark.
Buying was strong across major sectors, with private banking and financial stocks leading the rally. Mahindra & Mahindra was the top Sensex gainer, rising 6.15%. ICICI Bank advanced 4.65%, while HDFC Bank gained 3.56%. Titan and Axis Bank also recorded notable gains.
Power Grid Corporation was the only Sensex constituent to close lower.
Broader markets delivered a mixed performance. While the Nifty 100 and Nifty 500 gained, the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 0.82%. The India VIX, a measure of expected market volatility, rose 13.35% to 17.66, indicating continued uncertainty.
The rally came despite weakness in global technology stocks, as investors reassessed artificial intelligence-related investments.
Market analysts attributed the gains to buying in private banks, easing crude oil prices, a firmer rupee and improving investor sentiment.
However, rising volatility and global economic uncertainty remain concerns. Investors are expected to monitor foreign fund flows, crude prices and developments in the US markets for further direction.
