BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav inaugurated the 70th School State-Level Basketball Championship in Shahdol on Wednesday, praising the region’s rising athletic profile and declaring that sporting talent is no longer confined to major cities.
Addressing participants via video conference from his residence in Bhopal, CM described Shahdol as an emerging sports centre. The district’s Vicharpur village, widely known as a football nursery and nicknamed ‘Mini Brazil’, is increasingly expanding its focus to basketball, cricket, athletics, kabaddi and volleyball.
The tournament features 240 athletes under the age of 17 representing all 10 divisions across Madhya Pradesh. Despite historical resource constraints, Shahdol has maintained a strong 15-year record in state-level basketball, leading to the development of three local courts and the opportunity to host national events.
CM highlighted national initiatives such as Khelo India as crucial for rural athletes, noting that the state will observe 2027 as ‘Yuva Varsh’ (Youth Year) to foster education, sports and leadership. He encouraged competitors to focus on skill development and team spirit as India prepares for major international fixtures, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
School Education Minister Uday Pratap Singh and local public representatives also attended the ceremony.
