NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the government will introduce stricter measures to tackle examination paper leaks, including a new Bill with provisions for fast-track courts and tougher punishments.
In a late-night video message on Thursday, Modi said the Union Cabinet would discuss the proposed measures on Friday. After Cabinet approval, the government will seek to pass the Bill in Parliament next week.
Referring to the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, the prime minister said the issue had caused distress to millions of students and their families. He said paper leaks were a serious matter and assured students that the government was committed to protecting the integrity of public examinations.
Modi said authorities had already taken action against those involved in the alleged leak, adding that the accused had been arrested. He also said the government’s priority was to ensure that students did not lose an academic year, allowing around 2.2 million candidates to complete their examinations as quickly as possible.
The proposed legislation is expected to include fast-track courts to speed up trials and stronger penalties for those involved in examination fraud. Earlier this week, Modi also told NDA MPs that the government was working to make the country’s examination system more secure and foolproof.
