INDORE: An alleged illegal arms supplier escaped a police cordon during a joint operation by Indore and Dhar police, while his associate was arrested with a country-made pistol, officials said.
Police said accused Chetan Nath, wanted in multiple cases linked to illegal firearm supply, managed to flee during the operation conducted in Dhar district’s Naugaon police station area.
According to investigators, Chetan Nath had been absconding in a case registered at Rajendra Nagar police station. He is accused of supplying illegal pistols to around a dozen people in the Dwarkapuri and Rajendra Nagar areas of Indore.
Police launched a search operation after another accused arrested with a pistol nearly 12 days ago allegedly revealed Chetan Nath’s involvement in supplying illegal firearms to several people.
During Sunday’s action, police arrested one accused and recovered a country-made pistol and a moped from his possession. However, Chetan Nath, who was reportedly present at the spot, escaped after spotting the police team.
Police records show that Chetan Nath has several criminal cases registered against him, including murder, robbery and assault. Officials said he had recently secured bail in a murder case before allegedly becoming active again in the illegal arms trade.
Police said raids were being conducted at his possible hideouts and efforts were under way to trace and arrest him.
