MP Heatwave: 45 Cities Under Heat Alert, Relief Likely from 28 May

BHOPAL: Large parts of Madhya Pradesh are continuing to experience severe heatwave conditions, with 45 cities affected and a red alert issued in five districts, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Officials have also indicated the possibility of pre-monsoon activity beginning around 28 May, bringing rainfall to parts of the state.

A red alert has been issued for Niwari, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna and Satna due to intense heatwave conditions. The IMD said most regions, including Bhopal and Gwalior, are likely to remain under heat stress in the coming days.

Khajuraho and Nowgong remained the hottest locations, with temperatures consistently crossing 45°C. Other districts, including Gwalior and Ashoknagar, also recorded extreme conditions, with the mercury hovering around 44°C.

In Bhopal, hot winds and strong sunshine from morning reduced outdoor activity throughout the day. In Dhar, daytime temperatures reached 42–43°C, leaving streets largely deserted during peak hours. In Gwalior, temperatures are expected to exceed 44°C, with commuters seeking shade in public places. In Ashoknagar, heat levels near 44°C disrupted normal daily movement, with roads largely empty in the afternoon.

Some relief is expected in parts of Indore and Narmadapuram, where temperatures may moderate slightly. Earlier in the week, isolated rainfall activity was reported in more than 15 districts, including Umaria and Damoh.

The ongoing “Nautapa” period has intensified heat conditions across the state, though early signs of pre-monsoon activity may bring gradual change after 28 May.
