BRICS Adopts ‘Indore Declaration’ on Food Security, Sustainable Farming

Indore: BRICS nations on Saturday adopted the ‘Indore Declaration’ at the conclusion of the 16th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting, marking a new phase of cooperation on food security, sustainable farming, agricultural innovation and farmers’ welfare.

The declaration was adopted by consensus during the meeting chaired by India in Indore. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the agreement reflects a common commitment among BRICS members to strengthen food systems, improve nutrition, support farmers’ livelihoods and promote climate-resilient agriculture.

The declaration outlines a series of initiatives aimed at deepening agricultural cooperation among BRICS countries. These include the creation of a BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture, which will focus on sustainable farming practices and knowledge sharing. India’s Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research (IIFSR) is expected to play a key role in the initiative.

Member countries also agreed to establish a BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture to encourage the use of digital technologies, artificial intelligence and data-driven solutions in farming. The initiative aims to improve productivity, efficiency and resilience across agricultural systems.

Another key outcome of the meeting was the decision to establish a Global Forum on Farmers’ Rights in Seed Systems. The proposed platform will focus on protecting farmers’ rights, preserving indigenous seed varieties and promoting traditional agricultural knowledge.

BRICS countries further agreed to strengthen cooperation through the BRICS Agro Inputs, Genetic Resources and Information Network (AGRIN), which is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration in seeds, agricultural inputs and genetic resources.

The ministers also supported efforts to strengthen the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform as a Knowledge-to-Action Hub, with the goal of accelerating the practical application of research outcomes in agriculture.

Speaking after the meeting, Chouhan said the declaration demonstrates the group’s collective resolve to build more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems while addressing global challenges related to food security and climate change.

He said the initiatives adopted in Indore would help advance cooperation in areas such as agricultural trade, innovation, investment, fisheries, animal husbandry and climate-resilient farming.

India hosted the meeting as part of its BRICS presidency and used the platform to push for greater collaboration on food security, agricultural sustainability and technology-led growth in the farm sector.

The adoption of the Indore Declaration is expected to serve as a roadmap for future agricultural cooperation among BRICS nations and support efforts to make global food systems more inclusive, resilient and sustainable.
