NEW DELHI: The United States now supplies around 67% of India’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports, marking a significant shift in the country’s energy sourcing strategy, according to media reports.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India had initially planned to source only about 10% of its LPG requirements from the US earlier this year. He clarified that the decision was taken independently and was not linked to concerns over shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking about India’s evolving energy import strategy, Puri said there were questions at the time over the need to buy LPG from the US when suppliers were available much closer to India. However, the import pattern has changed considerably over the past few months.
“Today I’m happy to inform you that the United States accounts for something like 67% of our LPG imports,” the minister said.
According to media reports, the sharp increase highlights a major transformation in India’s LPG import basket, with the US emerging as the country’s largest supplier. India continues to procure crude oil and LPG from multiple countries as part of its strategy to diversify energy sources and strengthen long-term energy security.
LPG remains one of India’s most widely used household cooking fuels, making reliable imports essential to meeting domestic demand. Energy experts say diversification helps reduce supply risks and improves resilience against disruptions in global markets.
According to media reports, the latest figures underline India’s continued efforts to secure stable and reliable energy supplies while adapting to changing global energy trade dynamics.
