Ronaldo’s Portugal Career Ends After 23 Years

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly brought his 23-year international career with Portugal to an end, leaving behind an extraordinary record of achievements and milestones.

The 41-year-old forward is credited with 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, making him the most-capped player and leading goalscorer in men’s international football. His international career began in August 2003.

In his farewell message, Ronaldo expressed pride in representing his country and thanked his team-mates, family and supporters for standing by him throughout his journey.

He said he was proud of the contribution he had made to Portugal and would always carry the national team close to his heart.

His reported retirement follows a challenging period involving disagreements with head coach Jorge Jesus over team selection and his role in recent matches. Ronaldo had also faced disciplinary action after leaving the national team camp. He later apologised to his team-mates and supporters.

Despite the difficult final chapter, Ronaldo leaves behind a remarkable international legacy. His achievements include captaining Portugal to the Euro 2016 title and winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

He also holds several European Championship records, including the most goals and appearances in the competition.

Although a FIFA World Cup title remained beyond his reach, Ronaldo’s contribution to Portuguese football has made him one of the most influential players in the country’s history.
