MUMBAI: Actor Imran Khan has approached the Bombay High Court seeking interim relief against a notice directing him to leave India by October 28, according to his petition.
The notice was reportedly issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) following Khan’s detention during a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The demonstration called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In his petition, Khan has sought a stay on the notice and requested that the authorities produce the records supporting their decision. His plea argues that the notice does not specify the alleged violation and does not adequately address his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.
According to the petition, Khan has lived in India since the age of two. He has argued that being required to leave the country would affect his family life and livelihood.
The plea also disputes the circumstances surrounding his detention and challenges the grounds for the direction to leave India. These are submissions made by the actor and have not been independently established.
BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya had reportedly called for Khan’s deportation, alleging that his participation in the protest violated immigration rules.
Khan has sought urgent consideration of his plea. The court’s decision on the requested relief was not available at the time of writing.
The matter concerns a challenge to the notice, and no conclusion on the merits of the petition should be drawn before the court considers the case.
