The Unnao expressway bus accident claimed seven lives and left at least 25 passengers injured after a double-decker AC sleeper coach overturned on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway early Tuesday morning.
The bus, travelling from Delhi to Bihar, lost control near milestone 262 in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district at around 5 am. Police suspect the driver may have dozed off moments before the crash. The speeding vehicle rammed into the divider and overturned onto the roadside railing, causing passengers to be flung out through shattered windows.
Among the deceased were Bihar Police sub-inspector Ramchandra Ram and undertrial prisoner Chhatarpal Singh Tomar, who was being escorted to Gurugram for a court hearing. Officials said the prisoner had been lodged in Siwan jail in connection with a murder case.
How the Unnao expressway bus accident unfolded
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as injured passengers cried for help from beneath the overturned vehicle and along the expressway slope.
“Passengers were falling from the windows. Some broke the glass panes to escape after the bus overturned,” an eyewitness said.
Emergency teams reached the site shortly after local residents informed police. Several ambulances shifted the injured to the Community Health Centre in Auras before critically injured passengers were referred to Lucknow Trauma Centre.
One passenger reportedly suffered a severed leg in the impact, while several others sustained serious injuries. Police confirmed that five victims died on the spot and two more died during treatment.
The crash disrupted traffic movement on the expressway for nearly 30 minutes before cranes removed the damaged bus.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the tragedy and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured.
