MUMBAI: Indian stock markets ended largely flat on Wednesday as gains in auto, metal and oil & gas shares offset weakness in heavyweight banking and IT stocks.
The benchmark BSE Sensex fell 141.90 points, or 0.19%, to close at 75,867.80, while the NSE Nifty50 slipped 6.55 points, or 0.03%, to settle at 23,907.15.
Despite the muted finish in benchmark indices, broader market sentiment remained firm, supported by gains in midcap stocks and buying in select sectors.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Media rose 3.05%, while Nifty Metal and Nifty Auto gained 1.67% and 1.45%, respectively. However, Nifty IT and FMCG indices closed marginally lower.
According to Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, domestic inflows continued to support midcap stocks despite foreign institutional investor selling.
Power Grid, NTPC, Tata Steel and InterGlobe Aviation were among the top gainers, while HDFC Bank, Infosys and ITC ended lower.
