President Meets Cheetah Volunteers During Kuno Visit

Sheopur: President Droupadi Murmu met community volunteers involved in cheetah conservation on the final day of her two-day visit to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

Before departing for Gwalior, the President interacted with volunteers known as “Cheetah Mitras” to learn about their role in supporting conservation efforts and raising awareness in villages surrounding the park.

The volunteers said they work with local communities to provide information on cheetah behaviour, safety precautions and appropriate steps to take if cheetahs are sighted near populated areas. Residents are advised not to approach or harm the animals and to inform forest authorities promptly.

The President appreciated the volunteers’ contribution to conservation awareness and community engagement. She said the cheetah reintroduction programme is an important wildlife conservation initiative.

According to officials, India currently has 52 cheetahs, including 49 at Kuno National Park and three at Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. Officials said 32 of the animals were born in India.

During her visit, the President reviewed activities related to the cheetah conservation programme and other wildlife protection measures at the park.
