Swedish Minister Brings Baby to EU Meeting

Swedish Climate Minister Romina Pourmokhtari attended a meeting of European Union ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday with her three-month-old son, Adam, drawing international attention to Sweden’s parental leave policy and the role of shared parenting.

The EU Council said it was the first time a baby had attended a meeting of EU ministers. Images of Pourmokhtari seated at the negotiating table with her infant quickly went viral, sparking debate on work-life balance and support for working parents.

Pourmokhtari, 30, said she wanted to demonstrate that women should not have to choose between a career and raising a family. She credited Sweden’s parental leave system, along with support from her husband, for making it possible to return to work without compromising childcare.

The minister recently resumed official duties after parental leave, while her husband is on leave caring for their son. Sweden’s parental leave policy allows parents to share about 16 months of paid leave. Under the system, 90 days are reserved exclusively for each parent and cannot be transferred. If either parent does not use the allocated leave, those days are forfeited.

The non-transferable leave, commonly known as “daddy months”, was introduced to encourage fathers to take an active role in childcare and promote greater gender equality at home and in the workplace.

The incident has renewed discussion about parental leave policies worldwide, particularly in countries where childcare responsibilities continue to fall largely on mothers. Supporters say Sweden’s model helps parents balance work and family life while enabling women to return to their careers sooner.

Pourmokhtari also called for greater flexibility in parental leave rules and wider access to affordable childcare, saying both are essential to supporting working families.
