India reportedly ended its wait for an athletics gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games after the women’s 4x400m relay team won the final in Aichi-Nagoya on Tuesday.
According to media reports, Vithya Ramraj, Kiran Pahal, Machettira Poovamma and Prachi clocked 3:29.69 to finish first. Bahrain reportedly won silver in 3:30.21, while China took bronze with 3:31.02.
The victory was reported to be India’s first athletics gold of the Games and came after the country had collected silver and bronze medals in several events.
Ramraj also completed a three-medal campaign. She had earlier won silver in the mixed 4x400m relay and bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles. Her 54.75-second performance in the hurdles was reported to have broken PT Usha’s 42-year-old national record of 55.42 seconds.
India also secured other athletics medals on Tuesday, according to media reports. Pooja reportedly won bronze in the women’s high jump, while Gulveer Singh claimed bronze in the men’s 5,000m with a time of 13:32.75. Gulveer had earlier won silver in the 10,000m and 1,500m.
India also reportedly earned bronze in the mixed 4x100m relay and men’s 4x400m relay.
The women’s relay gold provided a strong finish to India’s athletics campaign at the Games.
