Injury Setback Hits Kiwis Before India ODIs

New Zealand have suffered an injury setback ahead of their five-match ODI series against India, with Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra ruled out after failing to recover in time.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed on Monday that Chapman needs more time to recover from a hamstring injury, while Ravindra is still recovering from a shoulder problem.

Chapman’s latest MRI scan showed that his left hamstring requires another two weeks of rehabilitation before he can return to action. Ravindra’s right shoulder has also not recovered sufficiently for him to field at full capacity.

The selectors have made changes to cover for the two absentees. Tim Seifert, initially selected for the final two ODIs, will now be available for the entire series. Henry Nicholls has been included for the first three matches, while Dean Foxcroft will join the squad for the final two games.

There is also uncertainty over fast bowler Matt Henry’s availability. He is expected to join the squad on Monday, after which his fitness will be assessed. Matt Fisher will remain with the squad throughout the series as an additional bowling option.

Head coach Rob Walter said the team did not want to take unnecessary risks with the injured players, particularly with a Test series scheduled later this month.

New Zealand will now need to adjust their batting combinations ahead of Wednesday’s opening ODI against India.
