Tamil Nadu election trends: Vijay’s TVK leads as family celebrates

Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was on course for a strong debut in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, leading early trends on Monday, according to the Election Commission of India.

Initial data at 12:30 p.m. showed TVK ahead in 105 seats, with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam trailing at 64 and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam at 44. The Indian National Congress was leading in five seats, followed by the Pattali Makkal Katchi with four and the Bharatiya Janata Party in three.

Celebrations were reported at Vijay’s residence as trends indicated a possible victory for his party, while security was stepped up in the area. Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy”, was leading in both Tiruchirappalli East and Perambur constituencies.

A win for TVK would mark a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, long dominated by Dravidian parties. Launched in 2024, the party has gained rapid traction, making Vijay’s electoral debut one of the most closely watched contests in recent years.

TVK national spokesperson Felix Gerald said the party was confident of forming the government with an absolute majority, citing public dissatisfaction with established parties. He told PTI Videos that voters had backed TVK as an alternative despite the long-standing presence of its rivals.

Among smaller parties, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Communist Party of India were leading in two seats each. The Indian Union Muslim League, Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were ahead in one seat each.
