New Delhi: Severe thunderstorms in Uttar Pradesh and an intense heatwave across several states have left at least 104 people dead in weather-related incidents, according to officials and media reports.
In Uttar Pradesh, strong winds of up to 80 kmph and thunderstorms affected around 30 districts, including Prayagraj, Ayodhya and Bhadohi. Prayagraj reported 21 deaths, while Bhadohi recorded 17. In Bareilly, strong winds reportedly lifted a man along with a tin shed. Banda recorded a maximum temperature of 45.4°C. Authorities have issued alerts for thunderstorms, lightning and rain in several districts.
Rajasthan remained under severe heatwave conditions, with Jaisalmer recording 46.1°C for the fourth consecutive day, making it the hottest place in the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extreme heat in Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Barmer, along with heatwave warnings in 13 districts.
In Madhya Pradesh, heatwave conditions persisted in more than 25 districts and are likely to continue till May 18. Khajuraho recorded 45.4°C. An orange alert has been issued for Indore, Ujjain, Dhar and Ratlam, along with warm night conditions.
Haryana recorded a 1.1°C rise in maximum temperature in the past 24 hours, with several cities crossing 40°C. Narnaul touched 42.5°C. A yellow heatwave alert has been issued from May 17.
In Bihar, an orange alert has been issued for heavy rain and thunderstorms in seven districts, including Purnia and Katihar. Uttarakhand is likely to receive rainfall in hilly areas.
The IMD has forecast continued weather instability over the next two days, with heatwave conditions in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, while thunderstorms, lightning and hail are likely in several northern and eastern states from May 16.
