GWALIOR: A cart driver from Gwalior district has alleged that he was cheated out of Rs 2.25 Lakh by a fraudster who promised to secure him a job with a municipal corporation.
According to a police complaint, the victim was contacted through a WhatsApp voice call in July 2024 by a man claiming he could arrange government employment. The caller allegedly told him that registration and processing fees were required to secure a position.
Believing the offer to be genuine, the victim transferred money in several instalments over a period of months. The suspect allegedly claimed that the victim’s name had been included on a selection list and later demanded additional payments to complete recruitment formalities and secure his appointment.
Police said the victim ultimately transferred a total of Rs 2.25 Lakh after being repeatedly assured that the job process was progressing.
The suspect later asked the victim to travel to Delhi, claiming that joining formalities would be completed there. However, despite waiting for several days and seeking updates, the victim did not receive any appointment.
According to the complaint, the suspect continued to delay the process before eventually cutting off all contact and blocking the victim’s number.
Realising he had allegedly been defrauded, the victim approached police and sought action against the accused as well as recovery of the money.
Police said they are investigating the case and examining digital payment records and other technical evidence to identify and trace the suspect.
Officials have advised job seekers to verify recruitment offers through official channels and avoid making payments to individuals promising government jobs.
