Indore cyber police have recovered Rs 1.62 crore lost in an international cyber fraud involving an equestrian athlete, returning the full amount to the victim’s bank account within 24 hours of intervention.
According to officials, the athlete, who is preparing for the upcoming Asian Games, was negotiating the purchase of a horse from Denmark-based HELGSTRAND DRESSAGE. As part of the deal, 45 percent of the payment had already been transferred to the company’s authorised bank account.
On May 29, 2026, fraudsters allegedly created a fake email identity impersonating the company director and sent revised bank details. Believing the communication to be genuine, the athlete transferred Rs 1.62 crore to a fraudulent account linked to JP Morgan Bank.
Following the complaint, cyber police acted swiftly and instructed immediate action to freeze the suspect account. Officials also issued a legal notice through proper channels to the concerned bank, which helped initiate recovery procedures.
The entire amount was subsequently reversed and credited to the victim’s account by June 30, 2026. Authorities said coordinated action between cyber units and banking institutions ensured a quick resolution and prevented financial loss.
Earlier, the same athlete had also been targeted in a similar Business Email Compromise (BEC) fraud, in which Rs 3.75 crore was recovered by cyber police.
