BHOPAL: A group of young volunteers from The Blue Umbrella community collected and removed more than 30 kg of plastic waste from around Kaliasot Dam during a cleanliness drive organised to mark World Environment Day.
The volunteers gathered plastic bottles, polythene bags and other discarded materials from the dam and its surrounding areas. Participants said plastic waste often pollutes water bodies and harms local ecosystems, particularly during the monsoon season.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and responsible waste disposal while encouraging community participation in keeping public spaces clean.
Members of the group said the drive reflected the growing involvement of young people in environmental protection efforts. The Blue Umbrella regularly organises social, cultural and civic engagement activities for young people.
Youth participation can turn environmental protection into a people’s movement. Through this cleanliness drive at Kaliasot Dam, we not only worked to remove plastic waste from the area but also sought to raise awareness about our collective responsibility to protect nature and conserve vital water resources, said Puneet Suryawanshi, a student and co-founder of The Blue Umbrella community.
The volunteers urged residents to avoid littering and support efforts to protect water bodies and the environment.
