Covid Setback to Business Success: Bhopal Entrepreneur’s Story

Bhopal: What began as a small packaging business on the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic has today grown into a successful enterprise with an annual turnover of Rs 2.5 crore, making Bhopal-based entrepreneur Sangeeta Choudhary a prominent success story under Madhya Pradesh’s Mukhyamantri Udyam Kranti Yojana.

Belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, Choudhary, along with her business partner Manjeet Kaur, started ‘MS Packing’ in 2019. The company manufactures surgical carton boxes, bakery boxes and other packaging materials.

However, soon after the venture was launched, the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted business operations and affected the company’s early growth. Facing financial uncertainty, the entrepreneurs turned to the state government’s Mukhyamantri Udyam Kranti Yojana for support.

Under the scheme, they secured a Rs 25 lakh loan from the Bombay Mercantile Cooperative Bank. In addition to the scheme’s three per cent interest subsidy, the MSME Department provided an extra one per cent interest concession, helping the business recover from the economic slowdown caused by the pandemic.

Choudhary said the company’s turnover during the first year remained limited to around Rs 9–10 lakh due to Covid-related disruptions. However, sustained efforts, financial assistance and market expansion enabled the enterprise to scale up rapidly over the next few years.

Within five years, the company’s annual turnover crossed Rs 2.5 crore and the enterprise now provides employment to 12–15 local youths, she said.

The Mukhyamantri Udyam Kranti Yojana offers collateral-free bank loans ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 50 lakh to individuals aged between 18 and 45 years, along with interest subsidies aimed at promoting self-employment and entrepreneurship.

Choudhary said government support and MSME policies had played a key role in helping first-generation entrepreneurs establish and sustain businesses during difficult economic conditions. She also expressed gratitude to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav for promoting entrepreneurship through the initiative.
