Gwalior fake marriage racket exposed after bride’s husband performed her kanyadaan
A shocking Gwalior fake marriage racket has come to light after a private hospital employee discovered that the man who introduced himself as the bride’s brother during the wedding ceremony was actually her husband.
Police in Gwalior have registered a case against seven accused, including the bride, for alleged fraud and criminal conspiracy after the victim claimed he was trapped in a staged marriage scheme aimed at extorting cash and jewellery.
Hospital employee allegedly trapped in fake marriage in Gwalior
The incident was reported from the Naka Chandravadani area under Jhansi Road police station limits in Gwalior.
The complainant, 35-year-old Ratan Sharma, works as a team leader in the emergency department of a private hospital in Jabalpur. According to the complaint, his family had been searching for a suitable marriage proposal for years.
Police said neighbour Sonu Tiwari allegedly introduced the family to a woman identified as Radha alias Diksha Mudgal, claiming she belonged to a financially weak family from Morena.
After the family approved the proposal, wedding ceremonies moved ahead quickly.
Bride’s husband allegedly acted as her brother
According to investigators, accused Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan attended the engagement rituals on 27 April while posing as the bride’s brother.
The marriage took place on 7 May at a hotel near Patankar Chauraha in Gwalior following Hindu rituals. The victim’s family allegedly spent nearly Rs 7 lakh on the wedding.
Police said several accused impersonated the bride’s relatives during the ceremony. Maya Devi allegedly posed as the bride’s mother during the kanyadaan ritual, while other relatives acted as members of the bride’s family.
“The complainant later discovered through WhatsApp chats that the man posing as the bride’s brother was actually her husband,” police officials said.
WhatsApp chats exposed Gwalior fake marriage racket
The alleged fraud surfaced after Ratan Sharma became suspicious of the bride’s frequent mobile conversations after marriage.
When he checked her phone, he reportedly found WhatsApp chats and evidence showing that Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan and Diksha Mudgal had already married in 2024 at an Arya Samaj temple in Agra.
Police believe the accused were part of a planned racket that targeted unmarried men through fraudulent marriages before fleeing with valuables and cash.
